Eating Disorder Dietitian:What to Expect and How We Work Together

Not sure what to expect?

You’re not alone. It’s understandable if you feel nervous, uncertain or even scared about speaking to an eating disorder dietitian. Many people worry they’ll be judged, told off or expected to ‘fix’ everything straight away. Reaching out doesn’t mean you’recommitting to recovery in one leap, it’s simply the first step towards understanding what’s going on for you and exploring whether professional support might help you.

What does an eating disorder dietitian actually do?

Our role goes far beyond telling you what to eat. Alongside talking about food, we also explore how it feels to eat, thethoughts and beliefs you might hold about your body and the fears or ‘rules’ that might have crept into your relationshipwith food. We work together to:

  • Gently challenge unhelpful food rules in a safe space
  • Create meal plans
  • Provide nutritional psychoeducation
  • Reconnect you with your hunger and fullness cues at your pace
  • Build trust in your body again without following strict targets or numbers
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals if needed

What will I be expected to do?

There is no expectation to change everything straight away. You don’t need to have a diagnosis, know all the answers or feel ‘ready to recover’ straight away to start sessions. Appointments are collaborative and the eating disorder dietitian works with you, not on you. We’ll have an open conversation and go at your pace to explore changes that feel manageable and safe for you.

Working together: a supportive, non-judgemental space

At the heart of our work is the therapeutic relationship we build together. We understand that trust doesn’t happeninstantly, it grows over time through conversations where you feel safe, heard and understood. We take a compassion-led, trauma-informed approach that is inclusive of all body sizes, backgrounds and experiences. Recovery looks different for everyone and there’s no single ‘right’ path to follow.

Is this kind of support right for me?

You don’t need to ‘look’ a certain way, have an official diagnosis or tick any boxes to benefit from support. If food feelsstressful, overwhelming or all-consuming, that’s reason enough to reach out. Even if you’re unsure on what kind of help you need, you’re allowed to explore your options and a safe place to talkabout it.
